DESCRIPTION
A distinguished Louis XVI style pendule à portique (portico mantel clock) presenting the full vocabulary of French Neoclassical luxury: four grey marble columns rise from a shaped white marble base to support a white marble platform, all united by richly chased gilt bronze (ormolu) swag mounts, bead-edge borders, and pineapple finials. The white enamel dial is exquisitely hand-painted with delicate pink floral garlands and fitted with ornate gilt brass hands, while red enamel quarter-hour markers at 15, 45, and 30 indicate a quality French movement with two winding squares visible at the 8 and 4 o'clock positions. Crowning the case is an elaborate ormolu trophy mount of intertwined serpents and ribbons, and beneath the portico stands a charming bisque (biscuit) porcelain figural group depicting a putto with a goat — a pastoral motif emblematic of the Louis XVI taste for playful classicism. An elegant and highly decorative centerpiece suited to a fine mantel, secretary, or display cabinet.
CONDITION REPORT
This pendule à portique is in overall presentable displayable condition with its ormolu mounts retaining good gilding and the enamel dial free of visible cracks or hairlines. The beveled glass bezel opens and closes correctly on its hinge. One ormolu pineapple finial is confirmed missing from the left-side plinth — visible in the second photograph — which constitutes genuine structural loss rather than a camera angle issue, and should be factored into pricing; replacement finials can be sourced from specialist ormolu restorers. The movement has not been independently tested and prospective buyers are advised to have it serviced by a qualified clockmaker prior to operation.
