DESCRIPTION
An exceptional French or Belgian Rococo Revival sideboard featuring richly figured burl walnut veneer over a hardwood carcase, with bold hand-carved acanthus, floral, and scroll ornamentation throughout the cabriole legs, pilasters, and serpentine apron. The shaped top retains its original variegated marble slab — consistent with Rouge Royal or Brèche d'Alep — displaying dramatic red, ochre, and cream veining with a characteristically contoured edge profile. The piece is surmounted by a magnificent matching triple-panel giltwood buffet mirror superstructure with beveled glass panels, egg-and-dart molded frames, and elaborately carved rocaille crestings — a rare survival of the complete ensemble. Cast brass bail handles and escutcheons with keyhole surrounds punctuate the burl drawer and cabinet fronts, confirming period-consistent hardware throughout.
CONDITION REPORT
The sideboard presents in overall good antique condition with the burl walnut veneer showing age-appropriate patina and minor surface wear consistent with a working dining room piece. The variegated marble top appears structurally intact though close inspection for hairline cracks or repairs along the shaped edge is recommended prior to purchase. The giltwood triple-panel mirror superstructure retains much of its original gilding with expected softening and oxidation; slight foxing visible in the mirror glass panels is consistent with original late 19th-century glass and should be considered a mark of authenticity rather than a defect.
