DESCRIPTION
A commanding example of provincial French cabinetmaking, this late 19th-century triple-door armoire presents the full vocabulary of the Louis XV style with exceptional sculptural confidence. The elaborately carved rocaille shell and acanthus crest cartouche crowns a serpentine cornice above a central beveled mirror door flanked by two solid walnut panel doors, each enriched with carved floral and foliate medallions. Cabriole feet and a deeply carved apron complete the silhouette, while original brass escutcheons and drop pulls add refined period hardware detail. Likely of Norman or northern French provincial origin, this imposing armoire represents the golden age of French regional furniture-making and delivers extraordinary decorative presence at a scale suited to grand primary bedrooms and formal interiors.
CONDITION REPORT
The armoire is in good antique condition consistent with its age of approximately 120–150 years. A chip is visible to the carved crest cartouche at the apex — a common vulnerability for high-relief applied carving of this type — and should be disclosed to prospective buyers; professional restoration is possible. The interior shelving, constructed in pine secondary wood, is believed to be a later modification and does not affect the integrity or value of the primary walnut case.
