DESCRIPTION
A commanding example of French Empire neoclassical design, this mahogany fauteuil de bureau (desk or library armchair) features a sweeping gondola barrel back and richly detailed gilt bronze ormolu mounts throughout. Cast brass lion and sphinx-form head terminals anchor the scrolled arms, while a centered laurel wreath medallion adorns the crest rail and acanthus mounts embellish the seat rail apron — hallmark decorative vocabulary of the Napoleonic Empire aesthetic. The upholstered seat retains its original or period needlepoint tapestry fabric in warm tones of ochre, rose, and sage, lending an authentic patina consistent with a distinguished 19th-century provenance. A rare and sculptural piece of significant decorative appeal, requiring restoration to be displayed at its full potential.
CONDITION REPORT
The mahogany frame of this fauteuil de bureau shows visible surface wear, minor losses to the finish, and slight structural separations at the joinery — consistent with age and period use. The gilt bronze ormolu mounts are intact and present well, retaining good surface color with expected tarnish. The needlepoint tapestry upholstery is heavily aged, exhibiting fading, soiling, and wear to the textile surface; professional reupholstery or expert textile conservation is recommended prior to display.
