DESCRIPTION
A commanding example of the Chippendale aesthetic, this richly carved mahogany side chair presents a masterfully executed serpentine crest rail centered by a bold shell-and-cartouche motif flanked by acanthus leaf scrollwork, above an openwork vase-shaped splat with a central diamond cutout and fluid C-scroll terminals. The heavily carved apron cascades with shells and foliate ornament, supported by four cabriole legs with carved knees terminating in pad or claw feet — hallmarks of the Anglo-Irish Rococo tradition at its most exuberant. The seat has been professionally upholstered in a warm coral chenille or velvet fabric with coordinating gimp trim, lending the piece a fresh, livable elegance entirely suited to contemporary interiors. An exceptional single chair for the collector, decorator, or curator seeking period presence with immediate usability.
CONDITION REPORT
The carved mahogany frame presents in very good condition with no visible breaks, repairs, or losses to the carving; the dark finish is consistent and well-preserved throughout. The coral upholstery appears to be a later replacement — clean, structurally sound, and aesthetically sympathetic, though not original to the chair's period of manufacture. Minor age-appropriate wear consistent with a 19th-century side chair may be present upon close inspection and is expected for a piece of this vintage.
